Match Analysis:
Defense:
Yet again, poor defending costed Tottenham the match. The backline was leaky against Liverpool as it was against many opponents this season.3 goals were conceded due to individual errors and general poor defending from the backline.
Spurs fans had mixed feelings before the match about Doherty playing on the left side. Turns out, Doherty cannot play on the left or the right. He gave away the ball too much and barely provided support going forward. Doherty is yet to impress Spurs fans this season.
Mistakes from the CBs and Hugo Lloris were major contributions to the 3 goals that were conceded. Miscommunication from Lloris and Dier allowed Liverpool's Roberto Firmino to score the first goal of the match. Poor blocking distribution from Lloris allowed the Liverpool right-back to score moments after the whistle blew for the second half.
Rodon's poor decision to control ball that came from the cross costed Tottenham the third goal.
Midfield:
The only positive that was taken from the match was the ability of Tottenham's midfield. The Hojberg and Ndombele partnership caused trouble for Liverpools 3-man midfield in the first half. Ndombele dribbled around the whole Liverpool team and took a major role in most of Spurs' counter attacks.
Hojberg fed many balls to the attackers while closing the gap in midfield. Hojberg's long awaited goal for Spurs came at the 49th minute when he scored a screamer from outside the box.
When Harry Winks was brought on, he showed some energy in the midfield which allowed attackers to have some chances. Tottenham's midfield continues to impress every game.
Attack:
After Son's goal was ruled out for offside, everything fell apart for the Tottenham attack. There were some moments in the first half where they created chances, but they failed to convert them into goals.
After Harry Kane was substituted off at half time due to an ankle injury, Tottenham's attack was non-existent. Tottenham was missing the number 10 position in the second half despite Son playing in that position.
Many Spurs fans questioned Mourinho's substitution choices as he brought on Lamela instead of Carlos Vinicius. Bergwijn showed good work ethics and created many chances in the first half. Tottenham's attack did not trouble Liverpool's defense this match.
Tottenham play the likes of Chelsea, Everton(FA Cup), and Manchester City in their next five matches. However, several important Spurs players may not be available for these big games due to injuries. The likes of Sergio Reguilon(3 weeks), Harry Kane("few weeks"), Lo Celso(undated) may be unavailable for some of these crucial matches. The Tottenham players will need to pick up their heads after the disappointing performance against Liverpool if they are to challenge for the Top 4. COYS
